“Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Picasso”

Mel Leipzig lecturer

Monday, March 31

7:00 – 8:45 pm

Last year marked the 100th anniversary of Picasso’s painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Many consider it the most significant painting of the 20th century and one of the most important in the early development of Cubism. The lecture will discuss the painting’s historical significance and other works by Pablo Picasso.

The Art of Frida Kahlo”

Barbara Tomlinson lecturer
Wednesday, April 16
7:00-8:00 pm

Frida Kahlo shares with Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo the distinction of needing but a single name.  Unlike these other monumental artists, however, her work is characterized by intimate scale and personal themes.  What other painter has given us such a rich collection of revealing portraits? Critics and "experts" have been taken by surprise by the increasingly widespread popularity of this self-taught woman whose work lies outside the conventional "story" of modern art.  Combining formal elements and pictorial devices from a wide spectrum of sources Frida created a unique and personal artistic language.  Come meet Frida and her work as you've never seen them before.  (Spelling on exhibition catalogue is Frida)

“The History of the Color Blue"
Barbara Tomlinson lecturer
Wednesday, May 21
7:00-8:00 pm

Who would have thought a color could have a history?  But, it does. Over the centuries Blue has been shaped by the substances that created it, the symbolisms it has come to represent, the uses to which it has been put.  During the 14th C, for example, Red and Blue had a fierce competition for the title of "most important color."  Catholics and Protestants, as usual, wound up on different sides of the struggle. From the Medieval Blue devil to Mary's Blue to Klein Blue, to Blue Jeans, come learn the incredible story of the color Blue.
